🌊 WHAT IS THE MERCHANT NAVY??

The Merchant Navy is a fleet of commercial ships (cargo ships, oil tankers, container ships, passenger ships, etc.) that transport goods and people by sea. It’s not a combat force — it’s about international trade and transportation.

Primary Role: Transporting cargo and passengers across the world.
Types of Ships: Oil tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, ferries, cruise ships, etc.
Ranks:

  • Deck Officers (Captain, Chief Officer, Second Officer)

  • Engine Officers (Chief Engineer, Second Engineer, etc.)

  • Ratings & Crew (Seamen, Oilers, Fitters, Cooks, etc.)

Training: Usually requires a maritime academy course and sea time training.
Work Life: Long voyages (4-9 months), international travel, tax-free income (in some countries).

Difference from Navy: The Navy is for national defense and combat; the Merchant Navy is for commerce and trade.
